Friday, April 1, 2005 (Washington):
US-based computer giant Microsoft is filing 117 federal
lawsuits targeting "phishing" scams.
"Phishing" refers to e-mails that look legitimate, but when
you click on a link in the message you're taken to a
look-alike Web site that can steal your identity.
Microsoft is filing the lawsuits at the US District Court in
Seattle.
The software giant hopes the lawsuits will help stopping the
fraudsters behind phoney Web sites that look like ones
operated by the company.
Crackdown on
The company's Internet safety attorney, Aaron Kornblum says
the suits can help track down the scam artists by allowing
Microsoft to subpoena Internet service providers and other
third parties.
Kornblum spoke at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
He was joined by officials from the National Consumer
League's National Fraud Information Center and the Federal
Trade Commission (FTC).
Jacqueline Beauchere from Microsoft said phishing was the
"international cyber crime of choice among amateurs and
professionals alike."
She said "95 per cent of (online) phishing is conducted with
way of e-mail."
Lyndia Parnes, from the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of
Consumer Protection said educating the consumer was the best
defence against phishing. (AP)
