CHENNAI: : The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
won more seats than all its rivals in Tuesday's
violence-marred local bodies byelections.
Of the 24 panchayat union member posts, the AIADMK won 13
while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured seven, the
Pattali Makkal Katchi two and the Marumalarchi Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam one. An independent won the remaining post.
The AIADMK candidates won all the four district panchayat
ward member posts also.
The AIADMK men were declared elected councillors in both the
wards in the Chennai Corporation and the lone ward in Tiruchi.
The party also won the Melur Municipal Chairman post. Of the
19 municipal ward member posts, the AIADMK won nine, the DMK
seven and the remaining went to independents. The DMK won a
(third-grade) municipal chairman seat (at Kurichi in
Coimbatore district) and the AIADMK the lone third-grade
municipal ward member seat (Jolarpet).
No contest for 385 seats
Of the 599 posts for which byelections were announced, there
was no contest for 385 seats. No nominations were received
for 32 seats. There were 500 candidates for the remaining 182
seats.
The death of a candidate at Pappapatti in Madurai district
necessitated postponement of the election. The State Election
Commission said the byelection would be held on May 27.
Azhagumalai has been declared elected Keeripatti panchayat
president.
