From TrueFoodNow.org: "Today,
thousands of products on the supermarket shelves are made
with ingredients from genetically engineered (GE) crops. But
GE foods are not labeled, despite warnings from doctors and
scientists that these foods may not be safe in the diet or
the environment.
The List focuses on foods made with ingredients that are
commonly derived from GE crops. The most widely grown GE
crops, accounting for about 99% of all the GE crop acreage
in North America, are soy, corn, cotton and canola
(rapeseed). Tomatoes and potatoes in processed foods may
also be from GE seed. Products on the RED list contain
ingredients that come from the most widely grown GE crops,
usually corn, soy, canola or cotton. Companies with products
on this list have confirmed that their products may or are
likely to be made with GE ingredients, or have not denied
using GE foods when given the opportunity to do so.
The biotechnology industry is developing GE varieties of
virtually every food we eat. But many of these are not yet
on the market. The Guide does not list foods that are not
yet genetically altered, such as most fresh fruit and
vegetables, olive oils, whole wheat or rice products, and
other foods that do not contain any GE ingredients that are
now on the market. For example, the non-GE baby foods listed
are only those that contain suspect ingredients, but many
other non-GE baby foods are not listed because they do not
include any ingredients that could currently come from GE
crops.
Since organic farming excludes genetic engineering, buying
organic food as much as possible is the best way to avoid GE
food. Some foods on the GREEN list are made with organic
ingredients only, but many others are not. While some
organic brands are listed individually (for example, some
organic popcorns are listed as an alternative to
conventional popcorn brands on the RED list), generally not
all of the many available organic options are listed. Check
out names of some of the leading U.S. organic brands.
The True Food Shopping List is not intended to be
comprehensive but to offer a starting point for shoppers who
are concerned about GE food. We simply could not include all
of the foods in your supermarket that are made with GE
ingredients. In general, check ingredient lists for products
made by companies on the RED list: if the ingredients
include soy, corn, cotton or canola, chances are these are
GE foods. Look for ingredients such as corn oil, corn syrup,
corn starch; soy protein, soy oil, lecithin, soy sauce;
cottonseed or canola oil."
