King of Bollywood in English, is a tale of an aging actor who in his heydays ruled Bollywood but cannot accept that he is now well past those days. He has grandiose notions about himself and clings on to his glorious past.

Om Puri plays the protagonist Karan Kumar (KK) who still live his by gone role in a flashy office in Juhu, Mumbai. He still has a line of faithful cronies around him. They are his loyal secretary cum companion Ratnesh alias Ratty ( Manoj Pahwa) who’s always on the mobile fixing up programmes and movie schedules for KK while in reality there is next to none; Guruji, a mute saffron clad astrologer, who helps find solutions to KK's complex financial and creative problems and Bahadur who takes care of KK, his house and office. His family includes his son Rahul (Diwakar Pundir) who hates his fathers flashy existence and wife Mandira, a former star herself.

KK the king of Bollywood cannot believe that he does not rule anymore though at times he has his doubts. His recent films are all flops and he doesn't get offers anymore. He wants to make his son a star, but Rahul is just not interested.

The former star's clichéd life takes a turn when a young British documentary filmmaker Crystal Chaurasia comes to India to take a documentary on the life and times of the veteran, backed by the International Film Commission. Crystal who is half Indian, grew up seeing KK's movies with her grandmother who was a great fan of KK. She is fascinated by the Bollywood industry that she talks the IFC to do the documentary.

The documentary details KK's life in films, his rise to the top, his successful movies and so on. He sports as many as 56 costumes and a number of wigs for his role. During its making, Crystal gets an insight to the Hindi film industries functioning, its marvels and maneuvers.

The director has cleverly delved deep into, behind the glamour scenes and makes a dig at the directors, top notch actors, its underworld connection and generally the Bollywood industry, humorously. The movie takes a realistic view of the film industry and its protocol through portraying the life of the former star. Each and every minute detail is looked into and made fun at every possible situation, even the filmy media is not left out.

Om Puri as KK steals the show with his brilliant performance. He transforms into the sometimes disgusting sometimes pathetic character in garish costumes with relish. Sophie Dahl the British model turned actress as the beautiful but complex young film maker is natural and charming in her role. Overall the movie will click for its humour and performances.

We rate it good.
