Critics
and detractors may take pot-shots at him for plagiarising and
rehashing tunes, but Anu Malik remains the most sought after
man as far as scoring music in Hindi cinema goes.
Son of veteran music director Sardar Malik, Anu started out
by scoring music for insignificant movies that didn't bring
him much acclaim. However, the years that followed have made
him a composer to reckon with. His debut score was the film
Aapas Ki Baatstarring actress Poonam Dhillon featuring the
track Mohabbat rang layegi ahista ahista. He followed it up
with composing music for Ek Jaan Hain Hum starring Rajiv
Kapoor and Divya Rana. The movie included songs such as songs
such as Dil dil hai koi sheesha to nahin.
He later bagged like Manmohan Desai's Mard and Ganga Jamuna
Saraswati. However, he was forced to tread a rough patch when
Hindi cinema moved on to romance centric films as opposed to
action based ones. Good assignments were hard to come by and
Anu Malik was forced to make do with intermittent successes
like Sohni Mahiwal and Ek Chaadar Maili Si. His perseverance
however, would pay off.
The turning point in his career came when Govinda's brother,
Kirti Kumar signed him on for Radha Ka Sangam. Anu gave his
best with this score and the result were songs such as Do bol
kehke, Radha ka sangam and Bichuvaa. His next big feat was
Mahesh Bhatt's telefilm Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi for which
he composed some memorable melodies such as Tere dar par
sanam and Baadalon mein chhup gaya hai chaand. The music of
the film brought him much critical acclaim.
Then on, there was no looking back for Anu Malik who went on
to deliver musical blockbusters, one after the other.
Baazigar helped him catapult to the big league. Films
including Sir, Jaanam, Chamatkar and Imtihan were some of his
earlier successes. In the midst of all this, he even tried
his hand at a private album titled English Eyes. He also
dabbled a bit with playback singing.
Anu worked with ace director Mansoor Khan for the film Akele
Hum Akele Tum which again spawned some lasting tunes. Some of
his other hits include Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Ram Jaane,
Naajayaz and Vijaypath.
However, with fame came criticism and Anu Malik became the
butt of finger pointing, for lifting and copying riffs.
Though the issue is debatable, Anu has often managed to
silence critics with exceptional scores such a Border,
Viraasat and more recently, Josh, Refugee, Fiza et al.
Subhash Ghai has also signed him for his forthcoming film
Yaadein. Anu added another feather to his cap for bagging the
special jury award at the Filmfare awards 2001, for his
outstanding body of work.
A bagful of coveted assignments, an impressive repertoire,
moolah, fame… with all this and more, Anu Malik couldn't wish
for more.
