She
is known as the finest dancer, singer and the actress film
industry had in the 40's and the 50's. Originally, Harikirtan
Kaur, she started her film career at the age of 12 in The
Cobbler followed by her feature debut in Majnu's Badnami and
became popular with her reel name Geeta Bali. This lively
dancer starred many films includingKidar Sharma's Suhaag Raat,
Guru Dutt's Bazzi, Bazz, Jaal, Sailaab and the hit musical
Albela. Sohrab Modi's Jailor named her the dramatic queen
with her famous portrayal of a blind girl.
In Banware Nain she used an eloquent gestural style to play
the country girl betrayed by the hero, matched only by her
contemporary, Nimmi. She made a great team with Shammi Kapoor,
the man she married later. Her death caused the novelist
Rajinder Singh Bedi to stop his directorial debut based on
his classic Ek Chadar Maili Si.
