With
his roots firmly entrenched in Virar, a suburb of Mumbai,
Govinda is still known as the Virar ka chokra and continues
to be the darling of the masses. He got noticed for his dance
moves in movies like Ilzaam Tan Badan and Love. Pehlaj
Nihalani's film Hatya gave him a break as an actor. What
followed were very mediocre and run-of-the-mill movies.
With Hum he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Amitabh
Bachchan, Rajnikanth and Danny and finally Govinda had
arrived. In David Dhavan's Aankhen Govinda played a double
role and won accolades for his sterling performance. Khuddar
and Raja Babu followed and hot on their trail a riot of
controversies and censor problems. The David Dhavan and
Govinda team came up with a string of hits like Coolie No 1,
Hero No 1, Sajan Chale Sasuralwith leading lady Karisma
Kapoor. Govinda became the new singing dancing sensation.
The crowning glory came with a double role for both Govinda
and Amitabh Bachchan with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, a movie
with a large budget, the gamble payed off and the producer
went laughing to the bank. Govinda had finally found his
forte - comedy. Govinda continues to be a money-spinner and
the one star producers safely bank on to give them a hit.
