in the history of films has a star sibling risen to a status
of a mega star in a short period of time as has Kareena
Kapoor.
Even as a 10-year-old, when Beboo (as she’s fondly called)
tried on wigs and new shades of lipsticks in her sister
Karisma’s make-up room, everyone knew that she would
eventually join movies. But even her mother Babita, who has
an iron hand over her daughters, could not foretell the
extent of her success.
The first unconventional step she took was by signing Refugee
immediately after rejecting Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho Naa…Pyar Hai.
Minor differences led to her walking out of the project, and
wisely so, since the film did nothing for its heroine Amisha
Patel. Refugee was a perfect launch for Kareena, who, with
her ethereal looks managed to carve a niche for herself as a
performing actress as opposed to a glamour doll.
The film did not do well but she was noticed, and then came a
stream of big makers who were starved for a new heroine.
Subhash Ghai signed her for Yaadein opposite Hrithik, and
Karan Johar followed suit with Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
Yash Chopra’s production signed her for a film with Rani
Mukherjee and Hrithik Roshan. And finally, she now has Sooraj
Barjatya’s next love triangle with both Hrithik and Abhishek
in the lead. To balance these projects that show her in all
the splendour of a Hindi film heroine, she also has Santosh
Sivan’s Ashoka – A Love Story, which is a historical.
With Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, Subhash Ghai and now Sooraj
Barjatya in her kitty, Kareena Kapoor has almost reached the
top position after just one film. Unlike an Aishwarya Rai who
had all the big makers backing her at one point in her
career, but blew it up, Kareena Kapoor’s career is being
monitored by the mother of all-star makers, Babita Kapoor.
It is highly unlikely that Bebo will falter as far as her
career moves are concerned. Over and above, she has age on
her side since she is only 20
