Nandita
Das, who made her captivating debut as the stunning lead in
the controversial Fire, is no empty-headed actress. She is a
very reluctant star, and is open about her disdain for
Bollywood.
Seen as a possible contender to Smita Patil, she portrays her
characters with aplomb. Caught in the limelight and
controversies, Das swaps herself between offbeat and
glamorous roles with ease.
She has a number of films lined up for release, Ek Alag
Mausam with Rajat Kapoor, Deveeri, a Kannada film, where she
plays a prostitute, the controversial, Bawander, where she is
the rape activist and an Oriya film, Biswaprakash. Das, a
self proclaimed rebel rejected Mann, a commercial biggie,
just because she was 'not comfortable' with it.
After doing Masters in Social work, Das started out with an
NGO called Ankur. Acting was incidental, she debuted with
Prakash Jha's Pariniti in 1987 with a small role. Fire was
her first major film for which she won as many accolades as
criticisms for her heartrending yet bold performance.
Daughter of the famous painter Jatin Das, she took to
painting only as a hobby. After receiving rave reviews for
her performance in 1947: Earth and Rockford, Das is ready to
take on the world by storm.
