What
Nargis brought to the Indian screen was a charisma that grew
from her innate strength and self-assurance. More than Raj
Kapoor's debut film Aag, it was Mehboob Khan's Andaaz in
1949, in which she played the modern miss, that saw her star
in the ascendant. Her winning streak continued with a variety
of roles in Barsaat, Anhonee and Jogan. But it was the
special chemistry between Nargis and Raj Kapoor that made for
that memorable winning combination and after Awara Nargis
worked exclusively with Raj Kapoor for 15 films. Their
romantic number Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua from Shri 420 remains
evergreen slice reinforcing that image. Even so, it was
Mehboob's Mother India that fashioned her role as earth
goddess, who shoots her own son (Sunil Dutt) in the end, that
made her an icon for all time. Later she married Sunil Dutt
and became an MP before losing her battle with cancer.
