Long before his first film 'Betaab' (1983) with newcomer Amrita Singh could hit the screens, Sunny Deol was written off by many critics in the industry. It was not their fault after all. They had seen too many star sons like Kunal Goswami and Kumar Gaurav come and go and why should Sunny be an exception. But it was here that everyone was wrong.

Sunny Deol showed his detractors that he was the true son of a true 'Jat' when he came out too good. The critics had to eat their words but not for very long. His very next film 'Sunny' with Papa Dharmendra and his yester year heroines Waheeda Rehman and Sharmila Tagore along with Son Sunny's former heroine Amrita Singh could not do much. The critics again attacked on him. The hammering continued as and when his movies flopped.

Some of Sunny's films which did not do well were 'Saverewali Gaadi', 'Sohni Mahiwal' and 'Manzil Manzil'. But soon his mentor Rahul Rawail lend a helping hand and 'Arjun' (1985) happened. As the frustrated, unemployed youth, he enthralled the audiences and created a big fan following. Other movies like 'Dacoit' (1987) and 'Yateem' (1989) kept happening and Sunny's reputation kept growing.

'Ghayal' turned out to be one of the greatest hits of 90s and made Sunny all the more lovable. His acting was so appreciated that he even bagged the best actor award. The film added a new chapter in his career. But some multi-starrer films like 'Paap Ki Duniya', 'Ram Avtar', 'Tridev', 'Kshatriya' and 'Chaalbaaz' later, Sunny gained ground as a actor who could carry a movie solely on his shoulder.

Films like 'Narsimha' (1991), 'Lootere' (1993) and 'Damini' (1993) were some of his great movies as an intense actor. Though he came at the second half of the movie, 'Damini' fetched him the National as well as the Supporting actor award. 'Darr' was something Sunny would like to remember for a long time. J P Dutta's 'Border' should be close to his heart.

This tremendous actor made a futile attempt at dancing in the song 'Yaara O Yaara…' ('Jeet'). It's good he did not do his experiment again. But the films that followed after that did not do much for him. Films like 'Zor', 'Ziddi', 'Salaakein' and 'Ghatak' did nothing special for him.
