Sunday, November 21, 2004 (Hyderabad):
The Shankararaman murder case could go the Best Bakery way.
Legal experts say there is a strong case for shifting the
hearing of the murder case outside Tamil Nadu.

"The police are under the direct control of the chief
minister. The entire government, political parties, the
opposition are united in this matter,'' said S Ramachandra
Rao, Former Advocate General, Andhra HC.
They doubt if a fair trial will be possible in TN, in view of
the surcharged atmosphere in the state.
"In this atmosphere, there are a lot of followers. Witnesses
cannot speak in his favour and it is difficult to get over
their fears. So it is the fittest for shifting," added Rao.
Case prejudged?
Sri Jayendra Saraswati's lawyers are also worried about the
impact Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister's statement in the
assembly would have on the police.
They say J Jayalalithaa's claim of a solid case against the
Shankaracharya indicates her government had already prejudged
the case.
"Chief Minister of a state is supposed to protect individual
liberty. All norms of criminal jurisprudence and
constitutional mandate have been flouted in this case,'' said
Rani Jethmalani, Counsel for Jayendra Saraswati.
But the public prosecutor, K T S Tulsi, denies the need for
the case to be moved out of Tamil Nadu.
Special status
Mischievous posters condemning the math have appeared in
Kanchipuram town, upsetting devotees. They fear the seer may
become a victim of a witchhunt.
However, there is near unanimity that the Shankaracharya
should not be given favourable treatment just because he is a
VVIP.
But many fear that his special status may actually now work
to his disadvantage.
They point to the trial by media, specially the local media,
as an example.
