Power lunch: Manmohan meets Shaukat Aziz

Wednesday, November 24, 2004 (New Delhi):

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is meeting his Pakistani counterpart Shaukat Aziz in the Capital today.

Aziz, the outgoing Chairperson of SAARC, is on his maiden visit to India to discuss bilateral issues.

He would also be extending an invitation to his Indian counterpart for the SAARC summit in Dhaka next year.

However, the focus of the visit is expected to be on the Indo-Pak peace process.

Earlier this morning, the Pakistani Prime Minister visited the Hazrat Nizamuddin dargah in the capital.

Sincere efforts

Aziz arrived in Delhi on Tuesday, and was welcomed by Singh with a phone call.

The two Premiers are setting in motion a process that can demolish the 'Berlin Wall' between the two countries.

"Who could say some 20 years ago that the Berlin Wall would be a thing of the past," Singh said.

"We can set in motion a similar process in this sub-continent. I will earnestly and sincerely work to that end," he added.

Singh's remarks came after a week of strong words from Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on India's position on Kashmir, accusing New Delhi of not showing flexibility to resolve outstanding issues.

Aziz met External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh on Tuesday, apparently putting back on track the peace process after hiccups of the recent days. The two sides agreed that composite dialogue should continue to move forward.
