Former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao passed away in
New Delhi today afternoon. He was 83.
Rao had been admitted to AIIMS on December 9, and had
undergone surgery to install a pacemaker.
He had complained of breathlessness and suffered a cardiac
arrest.
After Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in 1991, Rao was chosen to
lead the Congress Party. He was sworn as India's Prime
Minister in June 1991, perhaps the most unexpected turn
around in Indian politics.
Only weeks earlier Rao had been planning to retire from
active politics, but the sudden death of Rajiv catapulted him
to the top job.
Once in power, Rao became India's first PM from outside the
Nehru Gandhi family to complete a full five year term. This
despite the fact that he was heading a minority government.
Under Rao, economic liberalisation became the new mantra led
by the then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh.
