Thursday, December 30, 2004 (New Delhi):

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today did an aerial survey of the areas affected by the killer tsunami waves.

He was forced to cancel his ground visit to
Nagappatinam and Karaikal soon after a warning was issued on the possibility of a fresh tsunami.

The official reason given was that he did not want to disrupt the evacuation of people from these affected areas.

Adequate resources

After arriving in Trivandrum, Singh told the media that he had politely declined help from the United States and other western countries for relief and rescue operations.

He said he thanked the world leaders but told them "as of now, we have adequate resources to meet this challenge. If and when we need their help, we will inform them".

The government has decided to release an additional Rs 106 crore from the national calamity fund and Rs 30 crore from the agriculture ministry to save the pepper crop in Kerala.

Disaster management

He also said that the center is willing to consider an insurance scheme for fishermen affected badly by the tsunami.

In the long term the government has also decided to set up a national disaster management authority to cope with such calamities more effectively in the future.

Questions however, are being raised on whether another agency will be of any use.
