Friday, December 31, 2004 (Madurai):

In Tamil Nadu former DMK leader and Law Minister Alladi Aruna was killed while he was going for a morning walk in Tirunelveli by three unidentified assailants.

Four years ago, he was the minister in charge of law and justice in Tamil Nadu. Today, Alladi Aruna became a victim of lawlessness in his own former constituency Alankulam in Tirunelveli.

Brutal assault

The former DMK leader was hacked to death along with his friend by three unidentified assailants while he was going for his morning walk.

The police deny reports that there was a shoot out and say the post mortem only reveals cut injuries. An eyewitness has provided them some clues about the identity of the killers.

"The motive is not clear, but we will soon catch the three assailants," said Anand Kumar Somani, SP, Tirunelveli.

Questions remain

Not long ago, another former DMK minister Kirutinan was killed in an identical fashion in Madurai in what turned out to be a case of intra-party rivalry.

But it's not clear whether Alladi Aruna's murder has anything to do with political rivalry or a property dispute.

Earlier this year, Aruna had differences with his party high command over the denial of a seat in the Lok Sabha polls and was seen to be drifting towards the NDA.

Aruna is survived by his wife and six children in Chennai who will receive his body on New Year's Day.
