Thursday, January 6, 2005 (Jakarta):

Leaders from 26 nations and humanitarian organisations are meeting in Jakarta today at a global donor conference, to deal with Asia's tsunami crisis.

The meet will coordinate the massive reconstruction needed to rebuild the shattered lives of millions of people in six badly hit nations.

Indonesia has been the worst hit with two-third of the casualty figures coming from this nation.

And now the country has pinned its hopes on the summit, hoping that the world leaders agree to set up an Indian ocean tsunami warning system, the presence of which could have saved thousands of lives.

The Pacific Ocean has one such warning system.

Humanitarian efforts

The world has now pledged over $3 billion in aid, with tonnes of emergency food supplies, medicines, clean water and other relief material pouring into areas that were hit by the killer waves.

This humanitarian relief operation is the biggest such effort since World War II.

"We will make generously all the efforts that are needed. There are reserve, very important reserve, financial reserve on the side of the European Union," said Louis Michel, EC for Development and Assistance.

Stumbling blocks

But the United Nations says that the lack of trucks, aircrafts, boats, warehouses and operating airstrips were holding up relief operations in the affected countries.

The UN has also urged the leaders at the summit to ensure that the aid funds last for a long-term reconstruction and are not exhausted in short term programmes.
