Friday, January 7, 2005 (Mumbai):

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the third Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in Mumbai today.

Over 2000 delegates from around the world have registered for the annual gathering.

A special session on disaster management and discussions over problems faced by Indians in the Gulf will be the prominent feature on the occasion.

Dual citizenship issue

The Prime Minister is also likely to make an announcement regarding the dual citizenship issue, which is of major concern to the Indian diaspora.

Two years ago at the first Bharatiya Pravasi Diwas, the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had promised dual citizenship for persons of Indian origin (PIO).

Now, Dr Singh said President A P J Abdul Kalam has already given his consent to the Bill.

The registration process has already been started by his ministry, and has received tremendous response, he added.

Subdued note

The event is taking place in Mumbai, the country's entertainment capital.

However, the celebration elements like cultural events and entertainment programme have been cancelled in view of the tsunami tragedy.
