Three security officials were killed in an encounter
after militants stormed the Income Tax building in the heart
of Srinagar today.
Two militant were also killed in the encounter.
Target BSF
The attack took place at around 4 pm (IST) when an
unconfirmed number of militants entered the building. Within
minutes of the fidayeen attack, the building went up in
flames.
At least 40 people, mostly employees, were caught inside.
The terrorist's real target appeared to be the BSF
battalion's office right next to the Income Tax building.
And as the encounter progressed, the challenge for the BSF
was to build up pressure on the militants, without exposing
the civilians inside to any harm.
Peace shattered
A grueling two hours later, distraught residents were
helped out by security personnel. They were too stunned to
react and were just grateful to be alive.
"There was firing from all over the area, then we do not know
what happened. About 20-25 people are trapped inside on the
first floor and are very scared," said a witness.
While the encounter ended, the violence appears to have
shattered Kashmir's winter of peace.
