Sunday, February 20, 2005 (Srinagar):

With the Kashmir valley witnessing the heaviest snowfall in 15 years, there are fresh fears of a shortage of essential supplies.

As the Jammu-Srinagar highway continues to be blocked, the state government has asked traders not to hoard essential commodities.

It has also called an emergency meeting of its top civil and Army officers to take stock of the situation.

Thousands stranded

On Saturday, thousands of people were stranded on a key highway in Kashmir and flights to Srinagar remained cancelled for the second day running.

The 300-km Srinagar-Jammu highway, which connects the Kashmir valley with Jammu and the rest of India, has also been closed due to heavy snowfall.

There were reports of several people sustaining injuries across the valley after roofs of several houses caved in due to heavy snowfall.

Heaviest snowfall

Local weather officials confirmed that it was the heaviest snowfall Srinagar had recorded over the last 15 years.

Srinagar, a normally busy city, was under a thick white blanket and streets were deserted as most shops and businesses remained shut.

Heavy snowfall in the Kashmir valley earlier this month triggered avalanches across the region, killing at least 14 soldiers in the state.
