Tuesday, February 22, 2005 (Tehran):

At least 400 people are feared dead after a powerful earthquake rocked Iran today.

The quake measuring 6.4 in magnitude on the Richter scale has virtually wiped out villages near the Kerman province.

However, Iranian officials insist the quake was not as bad as a killer quake that killed 30,000 people in a nearby region in December 2003.

A magnitude-6.6 quake in December 2003 flattened the historic south-eastern city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.

All communication links seem to have been snapped and as a precaution gas has been shut off to the area.

Relief operations

Incessant raining is hampering relief operations with eleven rescue teams getting difficulty in reaching the spot.

People are reported to be braving the rain and staying outdoors fearing more aftershocks. Iran has at least a minor earthquake almost every day.

Experts say this is because the country is at the confluence of three of the Earth's plates and is literally being squeezed by them.

The UN has designated as the worst country in the world in terms of earthquakes..
