(New Delhi):
Friday, March 4, 2005 (Chennai):
A court in Chennai has convicted a man accused of murdering
his relative in 40 days from the date of the crime.
The Chennai Police claims this is a national, if not a world
record for the fastest conviction ever.
A fast track court in Chennai has sentenced 45-year-old
Veerappan, a dhobi who killed his relative Vijaykumar over a
family dispute to life imprisonment.
The murdered man's mother was an eyewitness.
But what sets this case apart from the rest in the country is
that according to the Chennai Police this is the fastest
conviction in the country and perhaps even the world.
Scotland Yard is said to have had a criminal convicted for
murder in 45 days.
"This is a murder case. It took place on January 24. We filed
the charge sheet in two days. And today after just 40 days,
we have got a conviction. It is supposed to be a national
record," said S Murugan, DCP, T Nagar, Chennai.
Beating the system
The police insist that they are not after records and this
achievement is the result of a new drive to beat the system.
"It will send the right signal to criminals. It is definitely
a shot in the arm for the Chennai City Police," said R
Nataraj, Police Commissioner, Chennai.
In a country plagued by inordinate judicial delays, this
conviction should come as a ray of hope to thousands of
victims of crime and a warning to those who exploit the
loopholes in the criminal justice system.
