Saturday, March 12, 2005 (Ranchi):
BJP's Arjun Munda will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister
of Jharkhand today after the Centre stepped in and asked
Shibu Soren to resign as the CM late on Friday night.
Munda has been given time upto March 21 to prove his
majority.
The end to the 10-day long Jharkhand crisis came after a day
of drama and defiance in the Ranchi Assembly.
Wait ends
Munda's installation as the Chief Minister signals an end to
his wait. Since the announcement of poll results, he had
claimed the support of majority MLAs, only to watch Soren
being sworn in as Chief Minister.
He took his flock to the President and pleaded before the
Supreme Court for justice.
So when on Friday night Governor Sibte Razi invited him to
form a government, it was sweet revenge for Munda.
"We enjoy the majority support," said Munda.
Day of hiccups
But the late night celebrations for NDA came after a day full
of hiccups. UPA MLAs, intent on stalling the vote of
confidence ordered by the Supreme Court, forced five
adjournments.
Eventually, the pro-tem speaker had to adjourn the House till
March 15 as the state hurtled towards constitutional crisis.
The Centre decided it was time to intervene and after some
hectic political activity, Shibu Soren met the Governor and
submitted his resignation.
"Keeping in mind all the pros and cons, I have resigned. I
heard my inner voice and decided to resign," said Soren.
Debate sparked off
The Jharkhand episode is almost a repeat of what happened in
Goa, but it threatened to embroil constitutional and
executive heads.
For the Congress and the UPA, the bluff could not survive too
long as it never had the numbers.
But efforts to form a government have caused multiple
setbacks for the UPA. It has lost the government in Jharkhand
and the BJP has managed to make it a national issue.
