Wednesday, March 16, 2005 (New
Delhi):
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in New Delhi, on
her first visit to India after assuming charge of the key
post.
The issue of sale of F-16s figured during the wide-ranging
talks between Rice and External Affairs Minister K Natwar
Singh.
India conveyed its concern to the US over its reported move
to sell F-16 warplanes to Pakistan even as Washington said it
is looking forward to enhanced defence cooperation between
the two countries.
Leading to 'complications'
Singh said that while raising concern over the possible
supply of F-16s to Pakistan, it was conveyed that this might
create 'some complications'.
However, he said there were "no serious differences" in the
'free and frank' talks as the bilateral ties were maturing.
Democracy in Nepal
Meanwhile, Rice in an interview to NDTV said that Washington
is ready to work closely with India on restoring democracy in
Nepal.
She also said that she will not contest the 2008 Presidential
contest against a possible democratic contender, New York
senator Hillary Clinton.
In the context of the proposed pipeline from Iran through
Pakistan, Rice said that the US understands India's oil
needs.
