CHENNAI, March 19. — The Madras High Court today rejected a
plea by former Cricket Board president Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya to
exempt him from appearing before a city civil court in
connection with a contempt of court application filed against
him. Justice Mr S M Ibrahim Kalifulla declined to grant the
relief when Mr Dalmiya’s counsel Mr Somyaji sought it while
mentioning the matter before the court.
Sixth city civil court judge Mr Mohideen Pitchai had
yesterday directed Mr Dalmiya and present board secretary Mr
S K Nair to appear in the court on 21 March for an alleged
contempt of court.
The notice to the two, returnable on 21 March, was issued on
a petition filed by city-based Thayagaraya Recreation Clubi
who contended that Mr Dalmiya, by attending 17 March ICC
executive meeting at Delhi, had violated the 25 January order
of the court restraining the BCCI from nominating him as its
representative to ICC meetings.
