Friday, March 25, 2005 (New Delhi):

After the US denied Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi a visa, now the Centre has advised him not to travel to the UK for Gujarat divas.

The Chief Minister's office says it's because of security concerns.

Threat to Modi

Late on Thursday evening, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil spoke to Modi about their apprehensions regarding security concerns on his proposed three-day tour to the UK and persuaded him to cancel his trip.

"At 10:30 pm the Prime Minister and the Home Minister told the Gujarat Chief Minister that there was a perceived security threat to Mr Modi's proposed visit and asked him to cancel his trip for the present. Mr Modi has agreed to cancel his trip in accordance with their wishes," said Hasmukh Ardia, Principal Secretary, CMO, Gujarat.

With a series of protests being organised by human rights groups across UK and intelligence reports indicating that Narendra Modi may have been the target of terrorist groups, the Indian government felt it could not guarantee security for Narendra Modi.

The British government while issuing a visa to Modi had already disassociated itself from his visit saying there was to be no official contact.

Protests against Modi

Modi was to attend the Vibrant Gujarat celebrations in London on March 26 and organisations like Awaaz and South Asia Watch had protested vigorously against the visit.

"Our hearts are with the victims of Gujarat. The reason for our protests was to ensure that those responsible were held accountable and that the victims and horrors are not forgotten," said Suresh Grover, Awaaz.

For people like Grover, Modi's trip being cancelled is a vindication of their stand.
