Tuesday, March 29, 2005 (New
Delhi):
The Centre withdrew its tsunami warning early today and said
it was safe for coastal residents to return to their homes.
The move came hours after a massive earthquake struck off the
Indonesian coast triggering fears of a possible tsunami
hitting the Indian Ocean region.
No incidents of any unusual wave activity or rising sea level
has been reported from anywhere in India's coastal areas.
Precautionary move
The Crisis Management Group, which monitored the developments
all through the night, said the danger has passed.
"There have been no reports of tsunami waves in our region so
far. It seems that danger has passed. The alert message is
stand down," it said in a statement early today.
However, authorities in coastal states and Andaman and
Nicobar islands have been asked to continue to keep a watch
as a precautionary measure.
High alert
Soon after the quake struck the Sumatra Island at 2140 hours
IST on Monday, the Centre activated its disaster management
team in Delhi.
It issued warning to coastal states asking them to take all
precautions and remain on highest state of preparedness.
In addition, the Army, Navy and the Air Force were asked to
be on high alert to react to any eventuality.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Chief Ministers of all
coastal states and Andaman and Nicobar Lt Governor Ram Kapse.
Evacuation process
The alert was issued in coastal regions of Orissa, Andhra
Pradesh, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka,
Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar.
In Tamil Nadu, the state government asked people living on
the coast to move at least a kilometre inland.
And families whose lives have so recently been touched by
tragedy took no chances and started evacuating. Several
people spent the night on pavements in Chennai.
