(New Delhi):
Markets across the country will remain shut today with
traders going on strike in protest against the value added
tax (VAT) regime.
The controversial VAT will come into effect in 21 states from
the April 1.
Most trading activities in the Capital are expected to come
to a standstill.
The trading community, which has for the past several months
protested against the implementation of VAT, has now decided
to take to the streets for the next three days.
"We are not requesting or begging for anything we are asking
them to do what is good for the economy of the country and
the trading community," says Praveen Khandelwal, All India
Traders Association.
Service tax
Traders are also protesting against the 15 per cent service
tax that has been implemented on them. This they say should
be applicable only on service providers and not on them.
And even if VAT does get implemented, they should atleast be
exempted from the central sales tax.
On it's part, the government doesn't seem worried. "This
bandh will not be a success, we have met a lot of the traders
and we know their problems. This bandh is a result of an
atmosphere that has been created," says A K Walia, Finance
Minister, Delhi.
So it appears that only the grain markets will remain open in
the Capital while all other wholesale and retail markets will
remain closed for the next three days.
Traders will also be joined by petrol pump owners who will
join the strike for one day today.
The ultimate loser is the consumer. Not only does he have to
reconcile to paying more from April 1, he also has to bear
the brunt of traders strike.
