Chennai, May 13: The AIADMK
government in Tamil Nadu will complete four years in office
tomorrow.
It has been a turbulent four-year period for the AIADMK. Soon
after it assumed power on May 14, 2001, the Supreme Court
declared null and void Jayalalithaa's appointment as Chief
Minister by the then Governor Fatheema Beevi, forcing the
AIADMK legislature party to elect a new leader.
However, Jayalalithaa became the Chief Minister again after a
few months following her landslide victory in the by-election
to the state Assembly from Andipatti.
When the AIADMK formed the government, Jayalalithaa had
claimed that she had inherited an empty treasury and took
several steps to "put the state's economy back on the rails"
including curtailing several financial benefits to the state
government staff.
Jayalalithaa had then stated that the people had to "take
bitter pills" for the development of the state.
However, the AIADMK's rout in the Lok Sabha polls in 2004
forced the government to do a 'U' turn by reversing most of
its controversial decisions. The anti-religious conversion
law was withdrawn, free power scheme for the farmers
reintroduced and the hike in the bus fares and power tariff
reduced.
Information Technology sector received a boost during this
period with several IT industries evincing interest in
setting up units. One of the industries which has decided to
locate its unit in Tamil Nadu is leading mobile handset maker
Nokia.
The government's achievements included killing of forest
brigand Veerappan, and implementation of new Veeranam scheme
to solve partially the drinking water problems of Chennai.
Jayalalithaa, in a statement, quoting the achievements of her
government, said they (achievements) came about due to her
efforts.
Having a dig at the DMK president M Karunanidhi, without
naming him, she said a leader, who claimed himself as the
leader of the Tamil race, chose to given the money collected
by his party for tsunami relief to the Prime Minister,
without giving it to the state, the worst hit by the tsunami.
Jayalalithaa asserted that she would continue to work for the
people's welfare.
