CHENNAI: Union minister for
communications & IT Dayanidhi Maran is visiting San Francisco
between June 5 and 10 to promote India as a strategic hub for
manufacturing, marketing, R&D and services.
During the visit, Maran will pitch to draw major
international investments, especially from Intel, in hardware
manufacturing with a special focus on creating more and more
jobs, a statement issued by the ministry said.
The ministry of communications & IT has been in talks with
Intel for the past eight months on the possibility of the
company setting up an advanced test manufacturing (ATM)
facility in Chennai.
India has been short-listed by Intel as one of the possible
locations along with Vietnam and China for its ATM facility.
In this connection, Maran will be meeting Craig Barrett,
chairman, Intel and hand over a letter from Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh.
He will further impress upon the MNC the benefits that would
accrue to Intel if it locates its ATM facility in Chennai.
During his visit, Maran has also lined up meetings with Hong
Liang Lu, chairman, CEO & president, UTStarcomm; John
Chambers, CEO, Cisco; Hector Rulz, CEO & chairman, AMD; Craig
London, executive vice president, Solectron, Kenneth Juster,
former US under secretary of commerce and currently executive
vice president of a leading CRM company based in the city,
and Kenneth L Scroeder, CEO, KLA-Tencor.
Maran is also scheduled to meet Dr Vincent G Cerf, chairman,
Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
The meeting will enable them to discuss and promote
efficiency of routing Internet traffic within the country as
a sequel to the launch of .IN domain and other related
issues.
Over the last one year, the minister has had meetings with
most of these companies wherein India’s telecom and IT
capability was presented with a view to propel them to
consider setting up of their manufacturing or R&D units in
India.
The present visit to the USA is to follow up on the positive
feedback that has been received from these companies.
Maran would also have an interactive session and roundtable
with leading venture capitalists in the USA. During this
interaction, he will make a presentation on India’s strengths
in the telecom and IT sector with a view to getting high
profile venture capital investments in to the country.
The minister will also be presenting to the investors the
recent policy initiatives, incentives and reforms taken up by
his ministry to make India a global hub for manufacturing and
services.
