CHENNAI: An integrated office for Intellectual
Property (IP) for the whole of South India is all set to be
functional from the city soon.
The office, which has come up with an investment of Rs 10
crore, would have all the state-of-the-art infrastructure
needed for a world-class IP office.
The main features of the set-up would include a Patent
Office, a unit for trade marking, and an IPR tribunal.
The new office is part of the revamping steps undertaken by
the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and
Trademarks. As per the plans, the Central Government had
decided to build integrated offices at all the four metros in
the country.
The target objectives of modernised infrastructure,
extensive computerisation, re-engineering of procedures and
integration of Information Technology, human resource
technology, digitisation of records, efficiency, transparency
and operational environment of global standards will all be
met at the new office, said an IPR expert.
Apart from the new developments, the infrastructure in the
existing and hired additional accommodations in Delhi,
Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai have been fully modernised and
made operational.
While a completely upgraded and computerised Designs Office
in Kolkata had already been made operational, infrastructure
upgradation had been achieved at the Trademarks Registry in
Mumbai.
Moreover, the Patent Information Service in Nagpur had been
developed as an Intellectual Property Training Institute.
The new IP Offices at all the four metros, including Chennai,
are being built by the National Buildings Construction
Corporation Limited, a public sector construction firm.
