As per the initiatives, the company will install 50 bins at key locations in Chennai to collect PET bottles, besides planting 1000 saplings at the community level near their plant at Nemam, near Chennai, top company officials announced at a function here.

The environment initiatives were launched on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

Coca-Cola has also joined hands with United India Insurance to provide free health insurance cover to 250 rag pickers, said Sunil Gupta, vice-president (external affairs), Coca-Cola India.

"At Coca-Cola India, we are committed to undertake a whole range of community development initiatives aimed at improving the lives of local communities. We have undertaken a series of successful initiatives in partnership with local communities and government bodies to set up a range of environment conservation projects such as rainwater harvesting, tree plantation, PET recycling, solid waste management and paper recycling," Gupta said.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Forestry and Environment Vaithilingam launched the project and urged the local community to come forward to set an example by undertaking similar initiatives towards water conservation and environmental protection. "The PET Recycling Project will definitely improve the environment to a great extent," the minister said.
