James D. Wolfensohn became the ninth president of the World Bank Group on June 1, 1995. He has traveled to more than 100 countries to gain first hand knowledge of the challenges facing the World Bank's member countries.

It is the world’s largest external source of funding for education and HIV/AIDS programs. It strongly supports debt relief, is a leader in the international anti-corruption effort, helps bring water, electricity and transport to the poor.

Bank-supported projects have helped increase education for poor children in India, reduce tuberculosis infections in China, fight AIDS in Brazil, connect villages in Peru.

The World Bank Group consists of five closely associated institutions, all owned by member countries. Each institution plays a distinct role in the mission to fight poverty and improve living standards.
