Varadakutty, with 80% disability, is a happy man!
Born on July 23, 1949, Varadakutty's story is one of
courage and determination. At the age of six, he was
affected by polio and was able to move only with
assistance. Yet Varadakutty represents the handicapped in
various forums today, to redress their problems. He also
provides the handicapped with necessary aids and
appliances, arranges for bank loans and helps them in
employment.
Crusading for the handicapped, this Chartered Accountant,
who is also the President of Tamil Nadu Association for the
Welfare of the Physically Handicapped, works towards the
provision of equal and special opportunities for the
handicapped. Varadakutty takes pride in expanding the
association's activities in almost all the districts of
Tamil Nadu by organising seminars, medical camps and
vocational training programmes for the handicapped every
year.
His
mission does not end here. He has led an Integration Tour
of the handicapped - "Kumari Mudal Kottai Varai" in 1995.
He covered the 2,500 km distance from Chennai to New
Delhi,on a three-wheeler, to brief people about the causes
and prevention of road accidents.
His service to society has been recognised by the State and
Central Government. He is the recipient of many awards
including the`National Award' for being the best
self-employed person working for the welfare of the
handicapped and the `Thannambikkai Award' (Award for Self
Confidence) on behalf of the Pondicherry Physically
Handicapped Association.
