Central assessment team visits tsunami-hit areas

A team of officials from the Centre is touring Nagapattinam and other tsunami-affected areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu to assess the magnitude of devastation there.


The 11-member team is visiting Kochi and Kollam in Kerala and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.

It is divided into three groups and is led by a Joint Secretary Yashwant Raj in Home Ministry.

The team will submit its report soon after reaching New Delhi.

The home secretary is expected to hold discussions with senior officials in the state.

Rising toll

Meanwhile, in India, the toll from the disaster has gone up to 7,910. The authorities said 25 more bodies were recovered with the help of army in several areas of Tamil Nadu.

The tsunami has left thousands injured besid
es rendering them homeless.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa held detailed discussions with the central team to assess the extent of damage.

Back to the sea

Meanwhile, fishermen in Nagapattinam district have resumed fishing after a gap of 13 days.

Fishermen at Akkaraipettai village went to the sea after performing pujas to the 'God of Sea'.

The army has helped the fishermen repair their damaged boats.

Schools in Nagapattinam district will remain closed until further orders even as the district limps back to normalcy.

Most of the schools in the district have been housing tsunami victims for the past 13 days. (With PTI inputs)
